A lifetime
of seeking
More than a biography, this film is a spiritual excavation. Bill W.: Conscious Contact follows the ever-evolving inner life of Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, as he deepens his search for conscious contact with a Power.
Through never-before-seen recordings, personal letters, rare photographs, and a revelatory interview with the man who introduced Bill to Transcendental Meditation in 1969, the film offers an intimate portrait of a man still seeking — still practicing — decades after co-founding a movement that would change millions of lives and still does today.
This is not just a story about recovery. It’s a story about what comes after.
The spiritual life, lived.

“I didn’t write the 11th Step. It came
to me as an inspiration.”
Bill W. 1970

This documentary film examines the effect and impact of Bill Wilson's white light experience that was pivotal in the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Prior to 1935, alcoholism was a death sentence. Bill and his cohorts developed a methodology, "by the dying for the dying," which has allowed millions to walk free in the 90 years since Alcoholics Anonymous’ inception.
This extraordinary film combines archival audio, photography and documents, introducing the A.A. co-founder as an expansive explorer, not a rigid authoritarian.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a spiritual solution to a progressive, fatal malady.
This film examines AA’s co-founder’s personal spiritual search. Not chained by any religious training, Wilson was able to maintain an open mind while surrounded by many who were not.

The Bill W.: Conscious Contact film introduces us, through private photographs and letters, to Bill Wilson’s evolving consciousness up until his death in 1971.
No matter what his current enthusiasm, Bill Wilson was careful not to give direction to others. He provided encouragement, never instruction.

In the film, we are introduced to Lincoln Norton, the man who taught Bill Wilson Transcendental Meditation in 1969. At the time, this form of meditation was characterized as a practice of the counterculture.
This documentary invites everyone behind the curtain to meet Bill Wilson, the seeker.

A joint venture with the Stepping Stones Foundation, the 60-minute Bill W. documentary, presents archival photographs and correspondence for the first time outside of the foundation's collection and digital archive. It allows the audience “into” the Wilson’s home and Bill’s writing studio, “Wits End”.
Directed by Kevin Hanlon and produced by Jay Stinnett, “Bill W. Conscious Contact” presents Bill the spiritual seeker as opposed to Bill W. the public figure and caricature. An unprecedented collaboration, this Bill Wilson AA documentary provides fresh perspectives and includes conversations with Sally Corbett Turco, Executive Director of the Stepping Stones Foundation, William Schaberg, author of “The Writing of the Big Book”, and Lincoln Norton, the man who taught Bill W. Transcendental Meditation.
